A cake smash session is an incredibly fun and memorable way to celebrate your little one's first birthday milestone. It's a joyous occasion that involves cake, balloons, and a whole lot of messy, adorable moments.
I have been specializing in cake smashes in the Nashville area for the last 3 years and have had so many little ones in the studio to know a trick or two. To ensure a successful and enjoyable cake smash session, here are some dos and don'ts to keep in mind.
Dos:
Do plan ahead: Start planning your cake smash session well in advance, especially if you want photos to display for at their first birthday party.
Do communicate with your photographer: Discuss your vision, theme, and any specific shots you'd like with your photographer. Good communication ensures that you and your photographer are on the same page and helps capture the moments you envision.
Do choose a suitable cake: Opt for a cake that is smash-friendly and visually appealing. Avoid cakes with hard fondant or decorations that may be difficult for your child to break or consume. Soft buttercream frosting works well as it allows for easy smashing and digging in. I offer an all-inclusive option in the studio that already includes the perfect little smash cake. I take care of ordering it and picking it up so mom and dad have nothing to worry about!
Do dress your child appropriately: Avoid elaborate costumes or outfits that may restrict their mobility or cause discomfort. Remember, the focus should be on your child and the messy fun, so keep the attire simple and easy to clean. Don't forget every studio session includes access to the client closet, with several little outfits for you baby!
Do embrace the mess: The whole point of a cake smash session is the mess! Encourage your little one to dig in, explore, and have fun with the cake. Embrace the mess and let them enjoy the experience.
Don'ts:
Don't schedule the session during naptime: Make sure to plan the cake smash session at a time when your child is well-rested and in a good mood. A happy and energetic baby makes for more engaging and joyful photographs.
Don't force participation: While you may have a certain idea of how the session should unfold, remember that each child reacts differently. Some may dive right into the cake, while others may need a little encouragement. I'll make sure to give them time and space to explore at their own pace.
Pack a spare outfit: a going home outfit is necessary in most cases.
